Important Places to Visit in Nubra Valley

Enthusiast tourists across the globe love to visit Leh Ladakh trekking paradise of India. They can select any Ladakh package online from the several Ladakh packages designed by the famous tour organizer Destination@Doorstep. I will suggest you to choose Sand dune Magic Ladakh package which is suitable for historical, cultural, adventurous and peace lover tourists.

Nubra is a high altitude desert with rare rainfall and scant vegetation except along river beds at about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The villages are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard for oil, and a variety of fruits and nuts, including apple, walnut, apricot and even a few almond trees.

The Shyok River meets the Nubra River to form a large valley which separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass (18380 ft.) from Leh. Non-locals require an Inner Line Permit to enter Nubra. The permit will be obtained by your tour organizer in Leh.

Tour tour organizer Destination@Doorstep has arranged an ethnic camp to enjoy in Nubra Valley where you will stay for visiting the following important places and camel safari:
  • Ensa Gompa: The 250 years old Ensa Gompa, nestled on top of a rock overlooking snow-peaked mountains across the valley is much further away than it looks. It takes at least a six-hour walk to reach, which involves crossing the river at Hargam. It is one of the comfortable trekking routes for trekking in Ladakh.
  • Samstenling Gompa: It was founded by Lama Tsultrim Nima and was also known as Rezong Gompa. About 50 monks are residing at this 132 years old monastery. The Gompa has some strict rules and regulations.
  • Diskit Gompa: It was founded by Lama Sherab Zangpo of Stod in about 1420 AD during the reign of King Dragspa. About 100 monks are residing in the Gompa, which is a branch of Thikse Monastery. Spectacular view of the valley can be seen from the monastery. Diskit is the main village of headquarter of Nubra valley, which has a small market consisting of a row of shops and about 400 years old Gompa on the hilltop.
  • Khardungla pass: The road journey to Nubra valley leads through Khardung La pass is around 50 Km from Leh. There are two check-posts on the both sides of the passwhere you have to show the Inner Line Permit.
  • Hunder Village: It is the most beautiful village of Leh Ladakh to stay with lot of trees and you will really enjoy your stay at Hunder. It has a small monastery and ruined fort above the village. Hunder village is known for its sand dunes sitting pretty amidst snowcapped mountains green valleys and rivers. The wonderful Camel Safari (Double Hump Bactrian camels) from Hunder to Diskit through sand dunes takes two hours.
  • Panamik Lake has its own myth according to local beliefs that the fortunate can see a reflection of the famous Potala Palace of Lhasa in its water.

Camel Safari: Bactrian camel at Nubra Valley , Ladakh India

Ladakh is famous for adventurous sports like Trekking, River Rafting and mountaineering etc. To ride on double humped Siberian camel in snow desert of Nubra Valley is called Camel Safari which seems royal safari. The most distinctive feature of the Bactrian camel is its two humps. These humps are designed to store fat and water. However, it is true that Bactrian camels can go several days without water. In addition to the water that is normally stored in the body, the Bactrian camel stores about 1.5 gallons in special sacks around its stomach.

Bactrian camels are classified as herbivores. They prefer vegetation which is prickly, dry, salty, and bitter. Their ability to eat a wide range of products attributes to their success in very harsh conditions.
Camel Safari or Caravan with the double hump camels has been a life line for Ladakh since 17th century. Leh the main town of Ladakh was the centre for traders of Central Asia and rest of India. Double hump camels were used for riding and transportation of the goods in the Silk Route.

The only difference though, is that these camels are not the average desert camels, but a double-humped kind, which are shorter and stouter. Their humps are plump and pliable and collapse in winter when food is scarce. They are the double-humped Bactrian camels.
Camel safari is centered in the Nubra valley, with Hunder and Deskit being the most popular centers. Ride through the Nubra valley exploring the rugged terrain and changing landscapes of sand and snow. From Leh, drive to Hunder, and begin a camel safari through the sand dunes and scenic valleys to Diskit. Drive to Tegger village for the start of another enchanting camel ride along the river to Pinchimic. Then begin another leg of the camel safari to Panamic village, tour the village and visit the Hot Springs.

We started the camel safari on our shaggy, double-humped Ladakhi Camels, the safari starts along soft white sandy deserts with rolling sand dunes. Within a few minute we arrived at Diskit and took lunch.
In the afternoon we explored Diskit village and small market busy with activity. We also visited the Gompa, situated on a rocky spur above the village providing a commanding view of the valley. We had overnight stay in camps.
We visited active Samstanling Gompa, witnessing one of their daily Pujas. In the afternoon, we mounted our camels for the short ride along the river to Pinchimic, a spread out and picturesque area of the valley and reached Pinchimic for overnight stay in tents.

In the morning, we started the last round of our camel safari and travelled to Panamic. In the way we visited a beautiful lake set between two small hills. We reached the camps at Panamic in noon and took lunch.
After taking a short rest we explored Panamic Village and talked with its people quietly working their fields. Then we visited the thermal Hot Springs locally reputed to have beneficial medicinal qualities. We overnight stayed in tents.
Early in the morning visited to Ensa Gompa, across the river and clinging riskily to the mountain surrounded by few trees. We returned to tents and drove to Leh. In evening we reached Leh and checked in at the hotel for our overnight stay.

Experience The Nubra Valley Tour

Nowadays everybody likes to spend their holidays in a beautiful and peaceful destination. Ladakh, a hill station in Northern India is one of the best destinations in South Asia. Everyone is busy in surfing and selecting the best and suitable Ladakh Tour Package for the vacation. I am about to share a few pages of my personal diary with you which narrates of my splendid Nubra Valley Tour.

Nubra Valley is at lower elevation, it has a mild climate. This climatic condition has created lush vegetation in the valley and the valley is, therefore, called the “Orchard of Ladakh". The valley was part of the Caravan Route between Tibet and China. It has various trekking sites, along the countryside. The valley is also the natural home of the double backed Bactria camel. It is located Trans Leh, beyond the snow clad Khardung La pass.

Last year on 15th July me and my friend Vijay arrived at Leh airport by Jet Airways from Delhi in afternoon and hired taxi to check in Pangong Hotel. We had decided not to book any travelling agency to visit and stay in Nubra Valley and surroundings. One of the hotel employees advised us to search the small posters on the frontwall and advertising spots of travelling agencies, medical stores and restaurants who are looking to share their vehicle with a person or two, and in this way we can enjoy Nubra Valley Tour in lesser amount. Our search resulted positive and we found many advertisements in the neighboring market and changspa area about their requirement e.g. ‘Looking for 3 more person to join a 4 days trek from Lamayuru to Alchi starting on July 20th’or ‘Looking for one people to share a 3 days trek and 1-night jeep tour of Nubra Valley leaving on July 22nd’ etc. But these advertisements don’t suit our desire to stay two nights in the Valley. At last we had to book a jeep which was driven by Abdulla Bhai a nice driver and a gentleman too.

Jeep Safari in Ladakh compels tourists for trekking in Ladakh to the sightseeing destination for a few kilo meters. We have acclimatized in the hotel in Ladakhi atmosphere till the morning of 17th July to prevent ourselves from acute mountain sickness.

We left the Pangong Hotel early in the morning by Jeep with Abdulla. After a few km, jeep was stopped to register the tourists at South Pullu an army check post. After one hour we came to North Pullu, another check post where foreigners had to register themselves. There was only a tea stall to welcome us. Khardung La pass (18,380 feet) lies 40 km north of Leh in the way to Nubra Valley. There were a temple and a monastery in roadside. All motor vehicles crossed the pass slowly and effortlessly within two hours. The world’s highest motor-able Khardung La pass is used by army throughout the year. Within two hours we reached to the peak, it was 8 a.m. and as per our schedule we were right in time.

Snow was everywhere clinging to the mountain-side which we have touched it easily on the peak. We were stunned to feel severing cold and the intensity of the winds there. In spite of that atmosphere Abdulla was feeling no cold when he was in a T-shirt only and we were unable to stand properly because he was acclimatized to weather being a local people.

After traveling down for 20 km, there is a village, known as Khardung (14730 feet). It is cool even in summer season because it is surrounded by mountains. There is a Public Works Department (PWD) rest-house, state Government Livestock Development Center, home-stay accommodation and a primary school.

The village Khalsar (11480 feet) comes after traveling down for 43 km. It is a Buddhist village and has the same facility as Khardung village.

Diskit, Hunder, Sumur, Panamik, Bogdang and Turtuk are the main villages in Nubra Valley. We found Hunder (9900 feet) the most beautiful village of the Valley. It has greenery and fruit trees as such cherry, apricot, walnuts, almonds etc. It has about 1150 Buddhist population with a few Muslims. They invite each other in religious ceremonies and live together peacefully.

It is one of the best areas for trekking in Nubra Valley. Tourists can stay and visit to satisfy their thrust of wonderful sightseeing by trekking to sand dunes, monastery, temple, ruins of palaces and double humped Ladakhi camel (Siberian). Hotel Karma Inn is nestled in the lap of Hunder providing a peaceful and relaxed holiday located just 1 km from the sand dunes of Hunder village in a very serene and peaceful atmosphere amidst poplar and apricot trees in Hunder Village.

Hundar is the last destination for tourists in the western area of Nubra Valley. Driver being a local people, he started to guide us. Under his direction, we started to move towards the Gompa of Hundar. The prayer hall was dark and calm with a huge statue of Buddha within a large glass cabinet of near about 14 feet against the far wall. There were painted murals on other walls and they looked quite unique and freshly painted.

It is said the Hundar was once the capital of Nubra. We can see here number of ruined forts and palaces like the two temples of Boddha statues: white and red, popularly known as Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Marpo respectively. Famous Flower Festival of Nubra Valley is celebrated in the month of June in Hundar. Young generation of the area offer flowers to the statue of Buddha in the Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Marpo respectively.

The Valley consists of two rivers- Nubra and Shayok. The Nubra River flows from the north to north west and Shayok River flows through the other portion of the valley. At the junction of the rivers the valley of the Shayok is about 5 km wide, whereas the Nubra River is about 3 to 4 km.

Diskit (10000 feet) is the head quarter of Nubra Valley and situated at a distance of 110 km from Leh. It touches the border of Pakistan and China. Saser kangri-1, Saser kangri-2 and Saser Kangri-3 located between the upper reaches of the Shayok and the Nubra Rivers are the highest mountains of Ladakh which lies in Nubra Valley. Dosmoche the annual festival of this area is held in the month of February at Diskit monastery.

After watching Gompa, we came back to road. Abdulla was very much acquainted and familiar to that area as being the local people; he pointed to the top of a hillock and said that there were some ruins of a couple of interesting palace and views of Hundar village and the Nubra Valley were breathtaking from the top.

This left us with no choice except to climb to the top. The way was looking terribly difficult from the base but once we started climbing, it wasn’t as bad as we had thought; some portion of journey was difficult and tedious but overall it was manageable. We found the same as the driver had described, we were mesmerized with wonderful views of the valley along the way and that could not feel the pain and tiredness of the climb.

Partially ruined 3 shrines were at the top of the hillock which was quite old and very small. The oil lamps were burning to fade the darkness of the Gompas. Each of them had a lovely and unique statue of Buddha which was surrounded by ancient murals. We were surprised to see that all the Gompas were built along the edge of the hillock which was in teetering conditions. Those were providing the best views of inside and outside of the Gompas.

Our jeep turned towards Diskit where we had to stay in the rest house, it was cheap and best in that area. In morning we started towards the most famous monastery of Nubra Valley.

The Diskit monastery is situated on a hill, just above the flood plains of the Shayok River, on its right bank in the Diskit village (3,144 meters (10,315 ft)) in Nubra Valley. Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh. It belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, in the 14th century. It is a sub-gompa of the Thikse gompa.

The monastery has statue of Maitreya Buddha in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. An elevated cupola of the monastery depicts a fresco of the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet.
The Monastery administration runs a school, with support from a Non-Government Organization (NGO) known as the "Tibet Support Group", which has computer facilities and teaches science subjects, in English, to Tibetan children of the region.

A popular festival known as Dosmoche or the "Festival of the Scapegoat" is held in the precincts of the monastery in February during the winter season, which is largely attended by people from villages of the Nubra valley since the other regions in Leh are inaccessible during this period due to heavy snow fall.

Recent extensions to the monastery building are in good shape but the Dukhang ("main prayer hall") and Zimcchungh are not in good condition. Paintings have been covered with soot and images are kept in total disorder. The older part of the monastery is said to be in certain degree of decay, as cracks have been observed, and they remain untended.

The official residence of the Chief Lama of Nubra is located at the foot hill where there is also a very large statue of (Maitreya) Buddha. This impressive 32 meter (106 ft) statue on top of a hill below the monastery faces down the Shyok River towards Pakistan.

Diskit is the headquarters of the Nubra Valley and thus has lot of government offices with all basic facilities.
In the evening we move towards Panamic (10900 feet) where we stayed for the night. We had visited hot water spring of the cold area in the morning. Our driver parked the car by the side of the road and pointed to a concrete building, which seemed newly built half-way up the mountain-side; this was where we could find the hot springs that Panamik is famous for!
We walked up to the hot springs but the sight of unpainted, cement buildings by the side of a narrow stream was downright disappointing. We touched the water in the stream and found it to be quite warm to the touch. The springs had caused yellow-colored. Soapy pools everywhere and they definitely didn’t look inviting to bath. On the whole the place was quite boring.

We returned to the Pangong Hotel of Leh with unbeilievable beauty and sweet memories of Nubra Valley Ladakh. After coming back to our hometown we saw an advertisement of a tour and travel company named Destination@doorstep which offered a beautiful package to the same location with a bonus of few other nearby and important places, they had named it beautifully and elegantly as “Sand dune Magic Nuubra Valley” and stating that the tour is for 6 nights. Wish we had seen the scheme before our visit, we could have enjoyed beyond.

Mountain Lake of Ladakh

Increasing number of tourists in Ladakh is a positive sign for Ladakh Tourism. Ladakh is famous for trekking to marvelous location of geographical importance and adventurous sports.

Ladakh is amazing and wonderful beauty of the precious treasure of India; it is the pride of beautiful Lakes and high mountains with neat and clean environment which provides psychological freshness in tourists’ mind.
Mountain Lake of Ladakh

Tso Moriri a.k.a.Lake Moriri is one of the marvelous locations of geographical importance of Ladakh. It is one of the most suitable places for Jeep Safari and trekking in Ladakh. The Tso Moriri Lake is situated in the Changthang (northern plains of Ladakh) area at the altitude of 4,595 meter to the southeast of Leh in Eastern Ladakh. It is situated at a distance of 215 kilometer by road from Leh. It is the largest of the High Altitude Lakes in the Trans-Himalayan region, entirely within India.
Tso MoririLake is pinpointed between Ladakh, Tibet and Zanskar in the north, east and west respectively. There was an outlet to the south of the Lake which has slimmed slowly and continuously; and has become land to hem the flow of water. So water changes its quality of saline to brackish. Snow covered mountain peaks of Changthang plateau’s geographical setting is the source of water for the Lake.

This Lake was salty before 1959. In the earlier days, local people had extracted from the Lake to sell in Leh market. Nowadays its water is alkaline.

Summer season (June to September) is an ideal time to visit for tourists because heavy snowfall blocks the trekking route for rest of the months. It is also known as Mountain Lake. It is a beautiful and peaceful place in an amazing site amidst mountain ranges for tourists to relax. Its length is about 25 km from north to south and about 4 km in breadth and its average depth is about 120 feet, but the maximum depth of Tso Moriri goes up to 240 feet.

Tso PangongLake is larger than Tso Moriri Lake. Mountain Lake is more beautiful in some ways due to fact that area surrounding this Lake is a wildlife reserve and one can enjoy wildlife tour in Ladakh,  where tourists can see Tibetan wild ass, (Kiang), marmots, Bharal (blue sheep), hare, voles, red foxes and many species of migratory birds. The Snow Leopard and the Tibetan Grey Wolf are seen in a very few number. Jeep safaris have been known to chase wildlife such as Kiang and approach close to the breeding ground.

There is a regular bus service operated by J&K SRTC from Manali to Korzok. Tourists can hire local taxi from Leh Taxi Union. Enthusiast young bike riders can book bike for themselves from bike rental shops at the Old Post Office Road or ask your hotel management to arrange it.

There are two routes to reach Mountain Lake of Ladakh; but another is rugged and dangerous:
Leh to Tso Moriri :
Leh – Upshi – Chumathang – mahe – Puga – Tso Moriri.

The first half is on tar road and makes for a comfortable drive.  There is a small stretch of road which is rough owing to the rugged terrains of the region. It is advisable to engage local skilled driver for Jeep Safari in this route.

FLORA AND FAUNA OF LADAKH

Flora is a Latin word which means goddess of flowers and Fauna was sister of Faunus, a good spirit of the forest and plains. Flora and Fauna refer to plant and wild life respectively. The indigenous plant and wildlife of a geographical region is often referred to as that region’s flora and fauna.

Flora and Fauna of Ladakh were first studied by Ferdinand Stoliczka, an Austrian Palaeontologist, who carried out a massive expedition in the region in the 1870s. Flora and Fauna of Ladakh are in keeping with the mountainous nature of region. The Flora and Fauna of Ladakh have much common with those of Central Asia generally, and especially those of the Tibetan plateau.
There are hardly any trees and vegetation in sight in much of Ladakh, except for the few narrow valleys, where wild roses, willow groves and some herbs could be seen. However, above that, due to rapid decrease in tempreture, vegetation becomes stunted and sparse. An exception to this is birds. Ladakh has a great diversity of birds, a total of 225 species have been recorded, many of them that migrate from the warmer parts of India to spend summer in Ladakh. Among  Ladakh’s  most  important Fauna are bactarian camel, brown bear, Ladakh urial, lynx, red fox, syberian ibex,  snow leopard, Tibetan antelope, Tibetan argali, Tibetan gazelle, Tibetan wild ass, Tibetan wolf, wild dog, and wild yak.
Many species of finches, robins, red starts and the hoopoe are common in summer.  The brown headed gull and resident water birds include the brahminy duck [ruddy Sheldrake] bar headed goose can be seen in summer on the river Indus and some lakes of Changthang. The black headed crane, a rare species is also found in Ladakh. Other bird species are raven, red billed chough, Tibetan snow cock and chukar can be seen in summer in Ladakh.
The lammergeyer and golden eagle, common raptors are found here.

Did you know:-Only 200 Leopards are surviving in Ladakh. But you can see their foot print in winter only.

Leh-Ladakh | Trekking in Ladakh | Ladakh Packages | Destination@Doorstep

Leh Ladakh | Trekking in Ladakh | Ladakh Packages | River Rafting in Ladakh | Tours in Ladakh | Ladakh Trip | Destination@Doorstep |

Have you ever wanted to be in a place where you could witness the marvel of nature? A land which will mesmerize and thrill you, a place where you will forget the busy life and embrace beauty of nature, a place where you would like to ignore your phone calls and texts and just walk with the breeze and feel cuddled in the arms of the endearing atmosphere. I have carefully used these adjective to begin my description of a land, for which even words or images wouldn’t do justice. Ladakh the mystic land has captivated all those who came here to enfold her beauty. This land has an unusual splendor, especially when you travel through the rugged terrain and on the rocky roadways; the anguish of the jeep safari vanishes, and make you feel acquainted with the terrain.

Ladakh
Ladakh is known for its mind-boggling eco-system in the world. This land is rich in its flora and fauna, plateaus, uplands, and its distinct mountains. You can see a host of mammals and over a hundred species of birds in Ladakh, of which most of them are classified as endangered and rare species. Ladakhs eco-system is fragile and sensitive; hence through this article my humble motive is to promote eco-tourism in this pristine land, which is unhindered by the rising level of global pollution.

This rocky yet gorgeous land of Ladakh is located in the northern most part of India, Jammu and Kashmir. The aesthetic charm of this land attracts thousands of people from the world each year. My journey to this mystic land was an unplanned venture, however I was trying not to go overboard with my excitement, as I contemplated that Ladakh has many more things to explore. In Ladakh, my expectations were not just fulfilled, but this land gave a whole new perspective to my life. Ladakh is a great place for all those who seek adventure. This spell binding terrain offers a wide range of adventure activities such as Trekking, mountaineering, river rafting and jeep safari.

As Ladakh lies between the Kunlun mountain range in the north and the great Himalayas to the south, you will witness a host of gorgeous snowcapped mountains as well as feel the magical mountain breeze.

As a famous quote by Dostoevsky states that sometimes even perfect strangers, begin to interest us at first sight, even before a word has been spoken, similarly I too found a long lost kinship with the people of Ladakh. The interactions with the locals and my attempts at comprehending the Ladakhi culture, has made my stay in Ladakh an unforgettable trip. The people here are very cheerful and vibrant. This land is deeply rooted in its culture, and stands abreast with the modern traditions as well. The neighboring state Tibet, which lies to the east of Ladakh, has a strong influence on the Ladakhi culture, as a matter of fact even the Ladakhi language is written in Tibetan Script, and also this influence can be seen in Ladakhi cuisine as well. Talking about the Ladakhi cuisine, one should never miss to taste the savories like Thukpa (noodle soup), Momos (vegetable stuffed dumplings) and Tsampa (barley bread).

Buddhism is the dominant religion in Ladakh, Hinduism and Islam are the other main religions here. Ladakh can also be called a land of colourful festivals. The people here celebrate these festivals with much gusto and pomp. Most of the festivals here occur during the winters, some of the well known festivals here are, Hemis Festival, Dosmoche Festival, Losar, Thiksey, Karsha, Spituk Gustor and Matho Nagrang, Stok Guru Tsechu, Phyang Tsedup, Yuru Kabgyat and Sindhu Darshan.

These festivals make you travel across the boundaries of time and space with the spectacular display of colour and the amazing dance dramas that are visual treat. So it’s indeed a bad idea to miss this stunning display of Ladakhi culture and art.

Hemis is one of the most significant festivals here. Hemis is celebrated in July to commemorate the birth of Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Tantric Buddhism. The main highlight of the festival is the sacred dance drama performed by Lamas wearing vibrant facial masks and colourful brocades. The 3 day long festival is celebrated in the courtyard of the biggest monastery in Ladakh, the Hemis Gompa. Another major attraction of the festival is the two-storey high Thangka, a Tibetan silk painting embroidered with pearls and semi-precious stones, with the depiction of Padmasambhava.

Unlike many other places that I have visited, Ladakh is a bit different when it comes to its climate. Owing to its high altitude, Ladakh experiences extreme variations in its climate. Here the months of December and January are generally freezing below minus degree Celsius. Ladakh is a summer destination for international tourists whereas the domestic tourists flock to Ladakh to enjoy the view of the snow capped hills and frozen lake. In the months between April and October, the barren lands of Ladakh become dry and hot. Ladakh is also known as the region of scanty rainfall, as rainfall here is meagre. Drass in western Ladakh is the coldest place in India. It is considered to be the second coldest inhabited place in the world after Siberia. In winters, the temperature here drops down to about -40 degrees Celsius.

The best time to visit Ladakh is between June and September. During this time you will witness lucid stunning views and warm and sunny weather. The ideal time for trekkers is between July and August.

The main cities in Ladakh are Lamayuru, Temisgan, Ridzong, Saspol, Likir, Alchi, Leh, Stok, Phyang, Shey, Tikse, Chemre and Hemis. Leh is the largest city in the Ladakh region. The infamous war between India and Pakistan was fought in Kargil district of Ladakh in 1999.

Apart from the scenic terrains and beautiful mountains, I witnessed the most charming lakes in the country. And by most charming I mean the stunning Pangong Lake, it will surely captivate you with its serenity. If you don’t know, the Pangong Lake is bisected by the international border between India and China.

Ladakh –The land of high passes

Ladakh Roadways
Imagine being on the top of the world. In Ladakh, you feel like being on the pinnacle of the earth, your desire to explore bliss and beauty are rekindled here. To make you feel on top of the world there are many passes in this region. The well known passes are, Khardung La, Tanglang La, and Bara-lacha la. Khardung La lies to the north of Leh and is known to be the gateway to Shyok and Nubra valleys, and is believed to be the highest motorable pass in the world. An adventurous motor bike expedition is the best way to explore this region. Moreover, motor biking is also the best way to meet people from different cultures, and this adds to the learning you receive from Ladakh. The encounters with the locals will surely add to the pleasurable journey.

 Land of Monasteries

In Ladakh, one will get an opportunity to get rejuvenated and experience spiritual bliss. The mention of spiritual bliss here is directly associated to the beautiful monasteries in this region. The monasteries here add to the elegance and grace of Ladakh. Alchi Gompa, which is situated on the banks of the Indus River, is considered to be one of the most impressive monasteries in Ladakh. It is popular for its unique architecture and beautiful paintings. Thikse Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, located on top of a hill, approximately 19 kms east of Leh. It is noted for its Stupas, statues, Thangkas, wall paintings and swords. Other major monasteries here are Phyang Gompa, Korzok Gompa, Likir Gompa, and Spituk Gompa.

Ladakh is the haven for adventure sports lovers. People from across the globe flock to this rugged terrain to experience the adrenalin rushing adventure sports lie trekking, mountaineering, river rafting and jeep safari. Jeep safari through the rugged terrain is the best way to explore the captivating rustic beauty of Ladakh. River rafting is also a much sought after sporting event in Ladakh. River rafting from Phey village to Nimo renders a picturesque view of the gorgeous mountains and breathtaking landscapes of Ladakh. Also, cycling is a great adventure sport to be experienced in Ladakh. It is the best way to explore the exotic locales and the snow capped Himalayan range. Stok Kangri is the highest mountain in the Stok Range of the Himalayas in the Ladakh. This site is a popular trekking peak

Other major attractions to look forward in Ladakh

·         The Baily Bridge located in the Ladakh valley between the Dras and Suru Rivers in the Himalayan range. It was built by the Indian Army in August 1982 ·         Shanti Stupa in Ladakh was built by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura, who is also a rock musician, in 1991. The relics of Buddha are placed in the base of this Stupa. Shanti Stupa is located on a hilltop in Chanspa, Leh.
·         Buddhist Mani stones with the mantra of Avalokiteshvara inscribed on them. In Zanskar these uniquely carved Buddhist Mani stones are kept along the roadsides and rivers as an offering to the spirits of place (Genius loci).

·         The Ladakhi Yak - It weighs about a ton, and is 6 feet hig, and is known for its curved horn with tips that can be wide apart as much as 90 cm. The Yak safari here is also a one of kind experience.
·         Brown bears - In Ladakh, brown bears (drenmo/tret) can be spotted in the Suru valley and the area around Dras. Brown bears are believed to be one of the largest land-based predators.
·         There are around 225 species of birds in this region, which makes Ladakh the haven for exotic birdwatchers.   Pashmina shawls, stoles, woollen garments, handmade woollen socks, gloves, caps, sweaters, hand-woven rugs and handicrafts are the most shopped items in Ladakh.

In Ladakh, you feel like being on the pinnacle of the earth, your desire to explore bliss and beauty are rekindled here. It is the pilgrimage for all those who seek redemption from their monotonous jobs. This land of beautiful horizons will ensure unforgettable and colorful memories. In 1800 words it is really difficult to describe the charm and enigma of this land, however this journey has a positively influenced, and I will continue to write more about this inexplicably beautiful land.

I assume that I have succeeded in my attempt to describe the ethereal land Ladakh. The reason I say “attempt to describe” is because as I mentioned earlier words and color landscape mode pictures barely do justice to the grandeur of this magnificent land. Since black and white pictures will spoil the fun, I have deliberately chosen not to include any images of Ladakh here.
